ESXi 10G NIC issue I have a (UCSC-C220-M5SX) server and it has 2 Physical NICs (Ethernet Controller 10G X550) with (VMware ESXi 7.0.1 build-17325551) installed on it. I've connected of its NICs to a Gigabit Ethernet interface and the other one to a TenGigabit Ethernet but the TenGigabit Ethernet's speed appears to be (1000 Mbps, full duplex) instead of (10,000 Mbps, full duplex).

VMware ESX/ESXi 4.0 Driver CD for Brocade 10G NIC This driver CD release includes support for version 2.1.0.0 of the Brocade BNA driver on ESX/ESXi 4.0. The BNA driver supports products based on Brocade 10G PCI express Ethernet adapters. You can remove a NIC from an active virtual machine, but it might not be reported to the vSphere Client for some time. If you click Edit Settings for the virtual machine, you might see the removed NIC listed even after the task is complete.

The following network adapters may be available for your virtual machine, depending on the factors discussed above: Vlance - An emulated version of the AMD 79C970 PCnet32 LANCE NIC, an older 10 Mbps NIC with drivers available in most 32bit guest operating systems except Windows Vista and later. A virtual machine configured with this network adapter can use its Virtual Machine: 20 shares; (20/75) * 10 Gigabit = 2.67 Gbps Total shares: 5 + 20 + 10 + 20 + 20 = 75 As you can see, for each traffic type first the percentage of bandwidth is calculated by dividing the share value by the total available share number (75), and then the total bandwidth of the dvuplink (10 Gigabit) is used to calculate the bandwidth share for the traffic type. The deployed Virtual controllers have a dedicated NIC, vSwitch and vPort Group. Start the VMware vSphere Client, and log in to the ESXi server.

Remember, VMware NIC teaming does not need to be complicated to achieve load balancing, but the way you achieve load balancing in VMware is impacted by what level of vSphere licensing you have. Route based on originating virtual port and route based on physical NIC load (also called Load Based Teaming or VMware LBT) are both effective methods of NIC teaming.

With the new Hot Add/Remove feature, NICs show up under the “Safely Remove Hardware” list. Any user with administrative privileges can accidentally remove the NIC using this feature.

ESX performance with 10GbE is fantastic (very efficient networking stack).

This will be only between freeNAS, the host, and a few VMs for iSCSI and NFS. However, Gigabit tops out at 125-or-so mb/s, so I want to have a virtual 10gb switch to alleviate these problems.

A virtual machine configured with this network adapter can use its network immediately. VMXNET Optimized for performance in a virtual machine and has no physical counterpart. Put the VM that you want to use the NIC on that network. The reason you don't see the 10G NIC available fore the VM is that it's a physical NIC and virtual NICs (E1000e, VMXNET3, etc.) are just that, virtual. A virtual switch is what connects the VM to the physical NIC. VMXNET3 will run at 10Gbps when connected to a 10GbE card through a vSwitch. I have a new ESXi host that has 10Gb network cards connected my iSCSI Equallogic SAN. I created a VMkernel port and assigned both 10Gb nics to the vswitch. Since I'm using the software iSCSI initiator within the VM for to mount SAN volumes, I assigned the VM one virtual NIC and connected it to my vswitch (iscsi switch).
